Alien
Synopsis
A title sequence that is a reinterpretation of iconic horror movie, Alien, that keeps to its core roots as a cult classic. Used grunge textures, electrical footage, mixed media, and After Effects to composite the video in a team. Multiple rounds of revisions and group meetings were made throughout the process to ensure everything flowed well from beginning to the end without giving away too much. The goal was to ultimately be faithful to the original film and legacy of the franchise. Neon colors like bright red, bluish green, and cyan are used throughout to give its digital, modern look. A lot of title sequences delving with the themes of horror and isolation always have this unsettling atmospheric music and visuals that we wanted to capture. Understanding what makes a good title sequence involved a lot of research, especially looking at popular ones like Se7en. The final title sequence maintained fidelity to the original film's tone while providing a fresh, visually compelling reinterpretation that captured the suspense and atmosphere of the franchise.
Storyboarding
Since this was a group project, I wanted to layout the atmosphere and vibe the title sequence was heading for. My groupmates and I agreed it should be dark and gritty.
Animating and Compositing
Layering footage and messing with different blending modes was done many times to give an uneasy feeling to the title sequence. Some videos used were like footage of computer being smashed, filming empty hallways, and recording old looking, abandoned machines.
Post-Production
VHS transition textures gave the title sequence a whole new level of visceral uneasiness. Trying to have a balance of cool effects but also legibility of the cast of names was challenging.
