The Architecture of Life

Synopsis

This motion piece is an independent project that focuses on another biology concept, the component that makes all of life. Just like “The Defenders of the Immune System,” I used Cinema 4D to make the 3D models but this time I also used the sculpting feature inside the application to make some of the organelles look more organic and interesting. After Effects was used in post production to give it a more uniform look through all scenes. I used a muted, peach background color to give more emphasis to the cells which are way more saturated in color to pop out. Parallax was used to give more depth into the scene like things being blurry in the background and camera movements giving this “scrolling” look to them similar to that of old, classic games from the late 20th century. The final piece transformed a fairly complex biological concept into a visually dynamic and immersive experience.

Storyboarding

Storyboarding the motion graphic in this one was like riding a rollercoaster. I wanted to give the sense of parallax but also give an accurate depiction of the insides of a cell.

3D Animation

Sculpting the organelles inside the cell was the most fun part of the process. Making organic models is a huge passion of mine because I feel free and expressive while doing it. Staying accurate is still important when trying to make things scientifically.

Post-Production

To give a greater sense of depth for parallax, using depth of field and a bit of white fog gives more dimensionality. Doing post production in After Effects helped make the motion graphic look less flat and bring out a variety of colors.
